Ara Darzi: Antibiotic resistance is more frightening than COVID-19

Lord Ara Darzi, a leading surgeon and member of Community Jameel's advisory committee, has stated that the next global health threat is antibiotic resistance. With the belief that the risk is more threatening to public health than COVID-19, and with the backing of HRH Prince William, Lord Darzi is launching a new institute to combat a looming crisis. Prince William has agreed to be one of the patrons of The Fleming Centre, which will open in 2028 in London. Its opening will mark 100 years since Alexander Fleming first discovered penicillin, the discovery that informed modern-day antibiotics. Today, due in part to overuse and to mutating superbugs, antibiotics could lead to the creation of illnesses that claim millions of lives.
