Climate change and Muslim societies examples from Africa and Asia by Elfatih Eltahir MIT

Elena Sobrino, a student in the Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab (J-WAFS) community and a PhD candidate in the History, Anthropology, Science, Technology, and Society program at MIT, explained the ongoing water toxicity crisis in Flint, Michigan at a recent event held at MIT's List Visual Arts Center. She provided an overview of the social, economic, political, and racial factors at play in the situation. Her work as an anthropologist and ethnographer allowed her to interview and understand the community directly affected and their vision for the future of Flint, which includes ideas such as public gardens and green spaces. The backdrop of her talk was Gilberto Esparza's 'Plantas autofotosintéticas' (Autophotosynthetic Plants), which is part of the 'Symbionts: Contemporary Artists and the Biosphere' exhibit.
