SEASONINGS: Water buffalo commons & monoculture meltdown

21 May 2024
18h00-20h00
Royal College of Art, London

CLIMAVORE x Jameel at the RCA presents 'SEASONINGS' on 21 May 2024 at 18h00 at the School of Architecture at the Royal College of Art Kensington campus. The lecture will introduce the research developed at CLIMAVORE x Jameel at RCA, including 'Water buffalo commons' in Istanbul and 'Monoculture meltdown' in Italy. Aurora Fredriksen will provide a response and the event will culminate in a question and answer session. This event is open to the public.

CLIMAVORE x Jameel at the RCA reimagines foodways for drylands and wetlands in the climate crisis. It advances ecological networks to produce new knowledge and action towards spatial justice. Since 2022 the research has focused on two human-made seasons.

'Water buffalo commons' looks at a season of wetland disappearance in Istanbul, where herders, pastures, buffalos and other companion species are creating new ecologies on the ruins of post-industrial habitats while resisting the encroachment of the city.

'Monoculture meltdown' looks at a season of drought in Sicily and Apulia, Italy, joining farmers in the effort to challenge the leftovers of intensive food production by cultivating the rights of ancient seeds resisting heat and water stress for the future generations.
