Produced by Community Jameel in collaboration with Studio Kyaari and conceptualised and illustrated by Sudarshan Shaw, this biodiversity map of the Sundarbans draws on folk art motifs of West Bengal to depict 60 endemic plant and animal species and illustrate elements of the culture, religion and daily life of those who call it home.
A series of cyclones from 2019-2021 magnified the extremes of life in the Sundarbans. As the flora, fauna and infrastructure were devastated by encroaching seawater and saline soil, neighbours united in an expression of resilience that embodies the Sundarbans. The work of the Rupantaran Foundation, through the Community Jameel-support Ankur programme, amplifies local-led effort to preserve this magnificent ecosystem while adapting to its conditions.
