Globally, drought is devastating vegetation and severely stressing water supplies, compromising food production and spiking food insecurity. Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab (J-WAFS) researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), César Terrer and Wenzhe Jiao, are using remote sensing observations to build high-resolution systems to monitor drought, which can offer fundamental information on drought location, frequency and severity. In 2022, Terrer, assistant professor in MIT's department of civil and environmental engineering, received J-WAFS seed grant funding to produce drought monitoring systems for farmers.
